SCOTLAND - BORDERLANDS AND HIGHLANDS
5 ½ day workshop

INSTRUCTOR - John Mariana
John uses photography as an extension of his formal art training. He is accomplished in all areas of photography. Today he primarily uses a digital camera and at times he uses his medium and large format cameras to create fine art prints.
John's prints have won numerous awards in national and international competitions. John has presented his work and lectures at regional and national conventions for the Photographic Society of America.
He founded the Ambient Light Workshops in 1990 and since then has conducted many in-the-field workshops in Yosemite National Park, Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, Monument Valley, the Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde and Illinois State Parks.
John is an excellent, experienced instructor and specializes in teaching the beginner and the intermediate level student how to see images and how to use the histogram and digital systems.
He's also a fun guy to be around.
THE WORKSHOP
Come with John into one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. After a few visits to The West Highlands and the surrounding areas, John decided to bring others to see and photograph the castles, churches, abbeys and mountains.
This workshop is designed for the photographer who wants to experience a unique area of Scotland - the Borderlands and the Highlands. The workshop will begin and end at the Edinburgh airport. Transportation within Scotland will be provided by a mini-van with a driver. John will provide the itinerary for each day's shooting.
Tentative photographic areas include: Melrose Abbey Ruins, Jedburgh Abbey Ruins, Craigmillar Castle Ruins, Rosslyn Chapel (site for DaVinci Code Movie), St Conan Chapel, Kilkurn Castle, Inverlochy Castle, Urquhart Castle, Eilean Donan Castle, Glencoe Pass and other areas around Ben Nevis (highest mountain in Scotland).
The workshop is open to digital and film beginners through experienced photographers. This is ideal for digital photography.
THE FEE - Estimated at this time, pending 2009 room and minivan rates
- $1,990 per person with double occupancy (see registration options below).
- The fee includes a 5 ½ - day workshop, minivan transportation and a room for 5 nights in a three or four star hotel (double occupancy)
REGISTRATION
- An $800 deposit per person will be required when a final announcement is made. This deposit will reserve a place in the workshop and apply against the workshop fee. The remainder of the fee will be due February 1, 2009 or as soon as 10 people register, whichever comes first. If the minimum 10 attendees is not reached you will receive a full refund.
- When registering you would select one of the following registration options:
- You register along with another person/photographer who will be your roommate
- You register as a single attendee and ask to be notified of possible roommates. If a roommate is not available or desired you agree to pay the additional $680 single room supplement.
CANCELATION
You may cancel with a full refund up to the time that we have 10 attendees. After that time a refund will be provided only when we fill your slot with another attendee.
AIR TRANSPORTATION
You would arrange flights and travel time to arrive at the Edinburgh airport early Monday morning, June 8, 2009. Flights are overnight flights usually arriving at 8:30 am. This means that you would leave the US Sunday evening. And, you will need a US passport.

- Guided to the best photographic locations in the best light
- In-the-field instructions on metering, digital exposures, lenses, filters and composition
- Five nights double occupancy in 3 star hotel/castle accommodations
- Mini-van transportation with driver
- Recommendations for photographic equipment
YOU PROVIDE
- Comfortable walking shoes, camera, a tripod and film if applicable
- Round-trip transportation from your home to Edinburgh airport
- Meals and refreshments
